Streetcars Struggle
Plans were advanced for years in St. Louis to return streetcars to a district of
the city currently undergoing rebirth. The proposed lines would also connect with
the city's highly successful MetroLink light rail system.
The project that carried through from planning to operation was promoted by a nonprofit organization called Trolleys To
Go and is known as the Loop Trolley. Construction of the Loop Trolley was underway at the end of 2016. The streetcar line began limited operation on November 16, 2018. Unfortunately, the sponsors were unable to secure sufficient operatin funding and the line suspended operation at the end of 2019. Efforts are still underway to find funding that would enable operation to be restarted.

In addition to the Loop Trolley project, in Spring 2012, a downtown business partnership planned a feasibility study for a downtown modern streetcar in St. Louis.
