Spokane — Streetcar Study Phase 2
Rail Transit Online, April 2007
City officials want more information on the feasibility
of building a downtown streetcar system and plan to seek $600,000 in state
and federal money to pay for a study. An initial $160,000 analysis
completed a year ago by consultant URS Corp. found the cost would be at
least $50 million for a route between the Riverpoint college campus area and
the Spokane County Courthouse complex. The report said streetcars would
spur downtown development and reduce traffic congestion by connecting
neighborhoods. The phase 2 study would take about a year and would provide
more definitive data on costs, potential routes and station locations. The
proposal has strong support from the business community. |
