Streetcar Plans
Two streetcar projects have been proposed in San Diego in recent years.
First, a group in San Diego planned to bring historic streetcars
to the city's North Park district. The district's Main Street group planned
the system to achieve economic development benefits, to enhance transportation,
to serve as a tourist attraction, and to preserve local heritage. A feasibility
study was completed to support the project.
After this project failed to
attract funding, another plan surfaced to run streetcars on part of the
city's light rail system through downtown, and this came to fruition in the summer of 2011.
