Portland, ME — Streetcar Task Force Suggested
July 2012
City Councillor David Marshall in Maine's largest city has suggested studying the feasibility of a streetcar system in the city, according to the Portland Daily Sun web site. His proposal is for the city to establish a task force that would explore the concept and perhaps guide a consultant who would perform a formal study. The council then discussed the desirability of finding funding for a study before organizing the task force. Some questioned whether the city of 67,000 has the critical mass to support a streetcar line, but none expressed outright opposition to the concept.
Members of the public, including Sierra Club members and some residents who do not own cars voiced support for the plan, citing improvied transportation options and economic development possibilities. |
