Missoula — Streetcars May Return
Rail Transit Online, November 2011
A very preliminary streetcar feasibility study is to be part of a comprehensive analysis being undertaken by the Mountain Line, Missoula's bus transit system that also serves the University of Montana.
A consultant hired by the agency will look at several potential corridors including Russell Street, according to Mountain Line General Manager Michael Tree who believes
streetcars can strengthen a small city. "Communities that have put the streetcars in have found that economic development just blossoms virtually overnight," Tree told the Missoulian. "When you have an urban streetcar or light rail system, you pick up a whole different demographic of rider."
The idea has generated substantial
official support and is part of the Missoula Downtown Master Plan. Missoula Redevelopment Agency Director Ellen Buchanan says fixed rail provides an incentive for businesses to locate along the line compared to bus routes that can be moved or eliminated at any time. The $30,000 study, which will also contain recommendations for improving the bus system, is scheduled for release in January. |
