Minneapolis-St. Paul — Streetcar Added to Plan

February 2019

According to the Twin Cities Pioneer Press, the Metropolitan Council on Wednesday voted to add the Riverview Corridor streetcar line to its regional 2040 Transportation Policy Plan.

The move advances the $2 billion project to the environmental analysis phase, a three-year process that will further study its potential impacts on roadways, intersections, the current built environment and natural resources, as well as cultural impacts, according to a Met Council news release.

The 11.7-mile modern streetcar line will operate between Union Depot in downtown St. Paul and the Mall of America in Bloomington along West Seventh Street and on existing Blue Line light-rail track.

The project will add nine new stations along its route and share another 11 with the Blue Line and Green Line light rail. It is expected to provide 20,400 daily passenger trips by 2040.
