Little Rock — Streetcar Extension Opens
Rail Transit Online, February 2007
The half-mile (0.8 km) double-track extension of the
River Rail streetcar along Commerce and Third streets to the Bill Clinton
Presidential Center will open Feb. 16 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony
followed by free rides for two days. The $8.7-million project is expected
to generate 2,000 new passengers per month, about a 20-percent increase.
The new operating schedule calls for three of the Central Arkansas Transit
Authority's five Gomaco replica Birney streetcars to operate daily, with
four running on Saturdays and during special events. “This will better
balance our coverage between the two routes,” CATA Executive Director Keith
Jones told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. “This will give us more
frequency, too, on the North Little Rock side.” |
