Streetcar Success
An activist-sponsored referendum mandating construction of light rail was passed by Kansas City voters in 2006. However, studies concluded the proposal was underfunded and technically impractical. Subsequently, modern streetcars were adopted as an alternative to light rail, and serious planning for a streetcar system began with construction initiated in 2014. The line opened to the public on May 6, 2016.
