Detroit — Breaking Ground in Spring
March 2014
The M-1 Rail modern streetcar project will be breaking ground for the construction project along Detroit's Woodward Avenue this spring but questions remain about developing a regional mass transit system, the Detroit Free Press reported. The article included a new route map:
Plans now call for selling naming rights to the line, so what it will be called in the future is unclear now. If all goes well, the line could be carrying passengers by late 2016.
The new Regional Transit Authority has yet to plan how the M-1 line will fit in with future transit expansion, but it is expected that it will be extended further along Woodward Avenue and perhaps to other areas. Finding funding, given Detroit's bankruptcy, for expansion will be a challenge. The first phase, estimated to cost $140 million, has all but about $10 million committed. |
