Baton Rouge — TIGER Application Filed
April 2014
The city of Baton Rouge, the state capital of Louisiana, will seek a $2 million federal TIGER economic stimulus grant toward a proposed streetcar project, according to Greater Baton Rouge Business Report. The three-mile line would connect downtown and the Louisiana State University campus. Baton Rouge had a first generation streetcar system that closed April 23, 1936. The fleet included 18 four-wheel Birneys built by American and St. Louis car companies.
City officials expect to hear within 60 days whether the application will be funded. Officials are realistic about their chances as only about 5% of TIGER applications are funded. Other funding sources for the study will be pursued if this application is unsuccessful. |
