Atlanta — Streetcar Route Adjustment
Rail Transit Online, November 2006
Another route change for the proposed Peachtree Corridor streetcar has
been unveiled by the task force promoting the project. After meetings with
neighborhood groups, planners have suggested the downtown end should have
two branches, one to the Atlanta University Center through the increasingly
popular Castleberry Hill neighborhood, which has attracted a growing
inventory of upscale restaurants and night spots. The other segment would
run along historic Auburn Avenue from the Martin Luther King Jr. historic
district west to Five Points, then loop around Centennial Olympic Park to
serve such major traffic generators as CNN Center, the Georgia Aquarium and
the future World of Coca-Cola museum. The northern end of the line remains
unchanged along Peachtree Street through Midtown and Buckhead to the city's
border with DeKalb County near Club Drive. If all the extensions proposed
so far are built, the streetcar would be over 17 mi. (27.3 km) long and
carry 21,000 weekday riders. The task force will issue a report to Mayor
Shirley Franklin early in 2007 that will include a final suggested route
alignment along with a blueprint on how to bring the project to fruition. |
