Atlanta — Federal Streetcar Grant Released
Rail Transit Online, July 2011
The U.S. Department of Transportation has released a $47.6-million grant to the City of Atlanta from the TIGER economic stimulus program for a proposed 2.6-mi. (4.2 km),
12-stop downtown streetcar starter line linking the Martin Luther King Jr. Center with Centennial Olympic Park.
The route will serve Atlanta's business, tourism and convention corridor and will connect with the MARTA rail system
at Peachtree Center. "In addition to the convenience this streetcar will provide to the
millions of tourists and conventioneers who visit Atlanta each year, it will be a lifeline for thousands of people who live near the new line," said FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff. "Atlantans will be able to get to work, students will be able to get to the university and patients will be able to get medical care without having to spend a dime on gas."
