Tucson ― Transportation Plan OKd
Rail Transit Online, April 2007
An open house was held on
Mar. 21 by the Tucson Department of Transportation to update the public on a
planned four-mile (6.4 km) streetcar line. Planners now forecast average
daily ridership of about 4,200, with service running on a 10-min. headway
between 6 a.m. and 2 a.m. The route will run from the University Medical
Center to the University of Arizona campus, through downtown and terminating
at the Rio Nuevo cultural center. “It could be one of the most successful
transit routes in Tucson,” project manager Shellie Ginn told KOLD-TV
News. The $100-million project will need up to six streetcars. The city
will apply for federal funding to match the local share approved by voters
May 2006. |
