Portland — Streetcar Finally Delivered
January 2013
After several more promised delivery dates were bypassed late in 2012, the first Oregon Iron Works production streetcar has finally been delivered to the Portland Streetcar in January.
This is the first of a six car order that was supposed to be on hand for the planned April 2012 opening of the east side line. Instead, the line lay finished but unused for months until service was started in September with a limited service due to the shortage of cars.
Oregon Iron Works claims the cars are the first streetcars made in the USA in more than 50 years, but that is not quite true as the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority built a fleet of new cars in its own shops a decade ago. |
