Dallas — Streetcar Project Update
August 2012
The City of Dallas is planning to close the Houston Street Bridge for the addition of streetcar tracks in January 2013 if all contractual issues can be resolved by then, according to www.dallasnews.com. The city is planning a design-build contract for the 1.6 mile starter line between downtown and Oak Cliff. To accommodate the displaced traffic, the parallel Jefferson Street bridge will be converted to two way traffic during the construction.
The city reportedly has a short list of potential builders to supply the streetcars for the new line. The line must be in operation by 2014 under the terms of the federal TIGER grant supporting the construction.
