Washington, DC ― Columbia Pike Streetcar Gains Momentum

Rail Transit Online, June 2009

The WMATA board of directors has approved issuance of a Request for Proposals seeking consultants to conduct environmental planning and preliminary engineering on the Columbia Pike Streetcar project in northern Virginia.

WMATA is managing planning for the five-mile (8 km) line, which will link the Pentagon City Metro station with the Skyline development in
Bailey's Crossroad.

Funding will come from Arlington and Fairfax counties, which will contribute 80 percent and 20 percent, respectively, of the $150-million capital cost. The two jurisdictions are providing $4.06 million for the environmental and preliminary engineering studies, which will be completed within two years.

"For us, it's one of our top transportation priorities in Arlington," County Supervisor and WMATA board member Christopher Zimmerman told the Washington Examiner. "It's critical to the development planned in the corridor." He added that the project wouldn't be completed until at least 2014.
