Tampa – More Trolleys
Rail Transit Online, January 2000
The order with Gomaco for eight replica heritage streetcars to operate the Tampa-Ybor City line has now been increased to 10. The first unit is expected to be rolled out early this month. Meanwhile a historical group in Tampa is restoring a single truck Birney, presumably for use on the same line. Assembly continues on the new 88-LSS Birney Truck using reconditioned motor and axle assemblies from a Boston Elevated Railway Taylor truck with a new frame and springing designed by Street Railway Associates of Dallas. The Ybor City project is yet another example of how a historic trolley line is being merged with the need to have an effective rail transit system. Several are already open and others are under active planning.
