Tampa — Mayor's Plans for Streetcar
The Tampa Bay Busness Journal reported that in is second inaugural address, Mayor Bob Buckhorn said he will continue to advocate for improved mass transit in the region. In this spiriet, he said the city will "transform the streetcar into a real means of transportation for residents and visitors."
Expanding the TECO Line Streetcar has been under discussion for years, but motivating the consideration now are the plans of Tampa Bay Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik's to build a billion-dollar mixed-use development between downtown Tampa and the Channel district. Vinik's real estate executives have said they're willing to "take a leadership role" in the streetcar.
Expanding the route could run from $37 million to $60 million, according to HART projections and expanding the operating hours could cost over $1 million. The line starts service at midday currently.
Under discussion now is the possibility of extending the line and operating modern streetcars in place of the replica cars currently in use.
