San Antonio — Attorney Journal Opts Out
The Texas state attorney general has declined to enter the dispute over San Antonio local funding of streetcar construction. At issue are sales tax funds approved by local voters in 2004 for highways and transit. The city, Bexar County and VIA Metropolitan Transit plan to apply $92 million of the sales tax revenues toward a $190 million, two-route streetcar project, San Antonio Express-News reports. In 2004 voters were promised the tax would not be used for light rail and the current fuss is over whether or not to classify streetcars as light rail.
Supporters and opponents of the streetcar project will now have to resolve their differences through other means. The parties will likely fight the issue in court.
