Salt Lake City, UT — Award Given for Streetcar Study
Rail Transit Online, January 2011
The Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City has received a $470,000 federal grant for a downtown streetcar alternatives analysis study. Mayor Ralph Becker has been encouraging the concept of a downtown circulator streetcar system that would connect TRAX light rail stops with Central Station and the FrontRunner commuter rail terminal,
establishing walkable, transit-oriented development and providing non-automobile transportation options for residents and visitors.
"With this funding from the FTA, we take a giant step towards development of our downtown streetcar system," said Becker. "With a daytime population that doubles
every day ... and the expansive growth of our downtown core in Salt Lake City, the timing of this funding to increase our transit options couldn't be better."
The study area's boundaries are 500 East to 600 West between South Temple and 900 South. No specific routes or capital funding sources have yet been identified.
