Louisville, KY — Streetcars Proposed

March 2014

The Portland Business Association wants Louisville Metro Government to support the idea of operating 1940s era PCC cars to appeal to visitors' nostalgia, according to WAVE. The proposed service would connect Louisville's Highlands and NuLu areas with the Russell, Portland and Shawnee neighborhoods.

John Owen of the Portland Business Association said the streetcar line would bridge the dividing line on 9th Street. He said that miles of old streetcar track lie beneath the pavement and advocates removing the pavement so the tracks could be re-used. He estimates the cost of exposing the tracks as $50,000 per mile. The group is awaiting a meeting with the local public works deparment to discuss the proposal.
